What's Lost When We Toss Out Subjectivity

Of course, when you toss out subjectivity – and interoception – you are tossing lots of data. Even if you think the data are second-rate, that's still lots of data you are losing. But the data loss is only for starters. The deeper loss, when you are blind to your own internal senses, is… you.

The potential to influence your internal processes is lost. You lose a chance to bear witness to yourself. Whether it is how your shoulder blade glides across your rib cage, or the way you coordinate your breath, or how a change in your gaze alters your mood, I think you need to sense and register and refine not only how you move, but how you notice how you move. This noticing can feel like a refreshing brain scramble. When it brings about a greater internal harmony and effectiveness? That’s intrinsically pleasurable.
